Devlin De La Chapa

within the dawn
of this morning
our faces
are faced
and the still
of our
morning’s breath
tangle with
the scent of
stale beer
smoldered cigarettes,
tangle with
the scent of
spent Tequila
smoke remnants,
our parched lips
eventually touch
innocent, at first
yet hesitant to open
and expel
the harsh embarrassment
of uncleansed breath
our lips
simultaneously depart
and take flight,
the after film
on our eager tongues
then massage away
love’s hangover
of yesterday
before the shots
before the smokes
before the drinks
before the introductions
before strangers in a bar
who woke
in the previous dawn
single and alone
the beauty
the envy
of crisp virgin breath:
“Goodmorning, love,
I’m glad we met.”
