THE OPPOSITE OF MIDAS’ TOUCH

THE OPPOSITE OF MIDAS’ TOUCH
Ross Leese

drift through much of my life
a disillusioned moron
in love with unattainable girl
after unattainable girl
of my cliched dreams
touching and breaking and
destroying everything/all
I come across.

my god complex
is eating away
the remnants of
my flagging
sanity

mute as a war
veteran

selfish as
cancer

two big eyes
thick as
thieves

in love with the wrong girl
at the wrong time on
the wrong side of
thirty

but for all
the right
reasons.

  1. MM welcomes Ross Leese with two good poems. This is the first, and one to which I think I can relate.

  2. Sadness ,feeling alienated at a tentative dative past with no prospects or prospective at the present, only doltish wishes for the future, Ross through self deprecation and good humor comes out on top minus the Midas touch.

  3. Really like this. It’s immediate and clear. And “all the right reasons” is a nice unexpected twist. Nicely knowing.

  4. Whilst there’s a kind of willing collusion in the masochism of continual failures in love – shown by all those cliches – I find hope in the self-awareness here, which holds the possibilty of change. A progression, implicit if nothing else …

On the other hand, there’s always the option of continual self-delusion and disappointment – and maybe the true pleasure is a kind of masochism in and for itself …

  5. ” for all the right reasons ” …………..that’s a nose-grower
if you’re on the wrong side of 30… get a pet
