A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A WANNABE JETSETTER (AND HER GRANDFATHER)

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A WANNABE JETSETTER (AND HER GRANDFATHER)
Brian Le Lay

As though somebody delivered a timebomb telegram,
A landmine mired in a Happy Birthday cupcake,
She runs back and forth from closet to window, arms full,
Hurls a heap of last week’s worn-out get-up into the street

The way an old Italian grandfather throws
A thirty year-old living room rug out a window
Into the alleyway, a brash family secret,
And the footprints of dead relatives

Haunted the floorboards. He’s modernized
From that old world blue-collar sadness
To our art deco emptiness, a wilted orchid
Slouches on the mantletop for show
