PSYCH WARD BLUES

PSYCH WARD BLUES
Kevin Ridgeway

The linoleum gleams
its lemon lime shine
at my twenty four-hour home
away from home,
thrust in the clutches
of a sheriff’s deputy
into a ass-pinching
folding chair
hands
finally un cuffed
but no cigarette
breaks here
in wails of
purgatory

dressed to
the nines
in two children’s
hospital gowns
tied together
at my sweaty
navel
and wheeled
into a backroom
with thirty
other
captured
lunatics
of all
shapes
and
sizes
God’s
little
chuckles
that
he
keeps
to Himself

one Styrofoam cup
of tasteless
brown pudding later
washing down
the lithium with
a sippy cup
of frozen juice
Big Nurse
barks at us
as we twitch
and writhe
in our blankets
beneath
the
fluorescent
suns

an old man
lies prone
picking his nose
diligently
and grunting

Big Nurse
gives him
trouble

“I do things I like
to do and I enjoy
doing them,” he
says bitterly,
sticking as
many fingers
up his nostrils
as possible before
disposing of
his mucus on
the iron bars
of his bed

a kid gets up
and tries to
run AWOL
through the
electric doors
and gets his leg
caught, screaming
bloody hell

I turn over
in my delirium,
shaking and dreaming
of that girl
and her summer dress
flowing gently in
the spring air
those many years
ago

  1. More excellent work from Kevin, this man can paint a picture, and not just of events. Read more of his work by clicking the link:

Ed’s note: There have been so many submissions to MM, and I’m running behind, so I’m going to try and publish two poems a day until things even out. I’ll one later, having let this on breathe for a while.

  2. Nice ending. Going into a dream world in the midst of this horrible existence.

  3. A poem in reality no matter what voices try to drown you out from those walls,or choices confound you, or you are continually grounded, no matter what asylum, foxhole, ghetto,
or daily battle for your mind is arrayed against you, you are also facing the supernal word
and higher world of the poets, Dante, Milton, David, Robert Lowell (who was in many asylums)
yet who all wrote beautiful poetry.

  4. Allie Marini Batts

Wow, Kevin. At the core of all that pain, chaos and desperation, you manage to smuggle a lockpick of hope into the asylum, even if the only freedom it gives the speaker is inward. Powerful words, rendered precisely.

  5. This poem is a graphic novel.

  6. lithium is like fake sugar………..next time go for the haldol
    great poem !!!!!!

  7. I enjoyed this immensely, but I can’t express my thoughts better than Allie Marini Batts above. Thank you for sharing this work with us.
